Dr. Reena Kartha is an Associate Professor and Associate Director of Translational Pharmacology at the Center for Orphan Drug Research, University of Minnesota. Dr. Kartha is an expert on the biology of inherited metabolic disorders, such as lysosomal and peroxisomal diseases. Her research focuses on the intricate roles of oxidative stress and inflammation in the disease pathobiology. She is actively engaged in identifying novel biomarkers and repurposing therapies targeting the molecular pathways deregulated in these rare conditions. Dr. Kartha's research is supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health, the pharmaceutical industry, and non-profit foundations. Notably, she pioneered the development of an undergraduate-level course on rare diseases and actively mentors undergraduate, graduate and pharmacy students and fellows. Dr. Kartha serves on the scientific advisory boards for patient organizations and is the founding Director of Research Programs for the Indo-US Organization for Rare Diseases (IndoUSrare), a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization building collaborative bridges between the east and west to accelerate therapies for rare diseases.
